Life in Virginia and David's job

USS Theodore Roosevelt Aircraft Carrier
Over-haul

Over-haul
David's Navy career has him pretty busy these days. He works a normal 7-3 schedule. But every 4th day of the week he has an over night shift called Duty where he has to stay on the ship and he'll have to stand watches that are assigned to him. Whether that be, sitting at a desk answering the phone, watching over supply rooms that civilians can't access with a someone in the navy to accompany them(I'll explain more about why civilians). David is stationed on the USS Theodore Roosevelt which is under a complete over-haul(remodel). The 2nd picture is of the over-haul costing the government a whopping $558 MILLION. 3,500 crewmen and 3,700 civilian contracted to work on this HUGE project. Overhaul: After nearly 25 years of service, the USA’s nuclear aircraft carriers undergo a 3-year maintenance period to refuel their nuclear reactors, upgrade and modernize combat and communication systems, and overhaul the ship’s hull, mechanical and electrical systems. This is the refueling and complex overhaul. The over-haul only means one thing to me, NO deployments until it's completely finished which will be a couple more years at least I think. David is a hard worker and excited about his new ship and job. He's an EM(Electrician's Mate) or Electrical-Nuclear engineer. DUTIES PERFORMED:

ELECTRICIAN'S MATES (EM) are responsible for the operation of a ship's electrical power generation systems, lighting systems, electrical equipment and electrical appliances. The duties include installation, operation, adjustment, routine maintenance, inspection, test and repair of electrical equipment. EM's also perform maintenance and repair of related electronic equipment. Nuclear-trained EMs perform duties in nuclear propulsion plants operating reactor control, propulsion and power generation systems.

We are extremely happy where we are here in Virginia, but we sure do miss all our friends and family 3000 miles away. Pray that we can continue to have peace about missing our loved ones so much! Enjoy our first blog as I know MANY of you who read this are interested in David's job and what he's doing these days! Love and miss every!

  1. Good job Sarah. It was really interesting to see what David's job actually entails. I'll be interested to keep reading about your life there in Virginia.

I have a blog too if you're interested. So far most of it has been about my upcoming trip to Japan and the knitted items I'll be distributing. Here's the address.
